Krita Desktop is a free an open source painting application. Version 2.9 was released Thursday, February 26th, 2015. See below on where to download it. Head to the release notes page if you are interested in seeing what is new. The stable Krita release does not include the animation feature yet.
The current stable release of Krita for Windows is 2.9.11. The downloads are provided by KDE. Click on the link to get the portable zip-file version of Krita instead of the MSI installer. Krita requires Windows Vista or newer.
INTEL GRAPHICS CARD USERS: IF YOU SEE A BLACK OR BLANK WINDOW: UPDATE YOUR DRIVERS ! IntelHD cards might not be supported on Windows 10. Check the compatibility list from Intel.
If the download says it is a MAN file, try a different web browser like Firefox or Chrome, or rename the file extension to .msi!
Linux distributions package the currently stable version of Linux when they release a new version. Some distributions provide backports repositories which offer the latest stable version of Krita.
Use the following PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install krita
The Krita team creates updated and testing packages for Ubuntu and Mint. You can install them from the Krita Lime repo.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dimula73/krita sudo apt-get update sudo sudo apt-get install krita-2.9 krita-2.9-dbg
The Launchpad page This has Krita Lime builds. You can also install the Ubuntu version of Krita, but be aware that those are not available for LTS releases of Ubuntu and often lag behind:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install krita
Note: Previous versions of Krita MUST be uninstalled.
The latest version of Krita available in Debian is 2.6. Jessie (stable) has 2.8.5+dfsg-1+b2.
Visit KDE repositories. Find which repository fits your needs.
In addition, there are also these repositories. These builds use the Vc library, which makes painting much faster:
Get Fedora packages.. They are available in the stable repository for Fedora 20 and 21 with the name "calligra-krita".
Get the e-build for Calligra Suite. The portage tree is at: app-office/calligra-2.7.00. You can use this to install Krita as well.
sudo pacman -S calligra-krita
Arch Linux provides Calligra packages in the Extra repository.
Download the FreeBSD Packages. These are available in area51.
Mac OSX is very experimental right now and unstable. Download the latest OSX binary. OSX has only been reported to work with Mac OSX 10.9.
